Castell Conwy
Edward I's 13th-century fortress — one of Europe's finest surviving examples of medieval military architecture, rebuilt block by block for learners across Wales.
Open on Hwb →A Crown Jewel of the Iron Ring
Built for King Edward I as part of his programme to subdue Wales, Castell Conwy rises over the estuary with eight massive drum towers and a twin-towered barbican at each end. It took just four years to raise and is one of the most complete surviving medieval fortresses in Europe.
Alongside Beaumaris, Caernarfon, and Harlech, Conwy forms part of the ‘Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd’ UNESCO World Heritage Site — a group that together represent the most ambitious castle-building campaign of the late 13th century.
What Learners Do
A virtual tour guided by custodian NPCs introduces the castle's history, architecture, and cultural significance. Six standalone quests let practitioners pick activities to fit their lesson plans — from heraldic design to medieval construction.
- Dragon vs Lion — investigate the symbolism of Welsh and English emblems
- Become a Master Medieval Builder — recreate castle features using period techniques
- Stained Glass Window — design leaded glass for the royal chapel
- Fit for a Queen — plan rooms and gardens for Queen Eleanor's visit
- Castle, Flags and Heraldry — craft a coat of arms and banner
- Capture the Castle — explore siege tactics and defensive design
Supporting materials include a practitioner guide, Queen Eleanor's letter, garden design worksheet, and a guide to the benefits of medieval herbs and plants.
