St Davids Bishop's Palace
One of Wales's most iconic medieval sites — a palace of faith, politics, and community, shaped by bishops and ruined at the Dissolution.
Open on Hwb →Ecclesiastical Power in Stone
Raised next to the cathedral in the cleft of the River Alun, the Bishop's Palace was a statement of the wealth and reach of the medieval Welsh church. Its most ambitious building phase came under Bishop Henry de Gower in the 14th century — the distinctive arcaded parapet that rings the palace is his signature.
After the Protestant Reformation stripped lead from its roofs, the palace slid into picturesque ruin. What remains today is one of the grandest open-air medieval interiors in Britain.
